[Forums] New sub-forums

Post by The Ultimate DooMer »

As discussed in this thread, and the suggestion made on the 4th page, here's the feature request for:

A GZDoom sub-forum, possibly including a bug report section also. (like the existing DRD forum)

A mapping sub-forum, so that we can easily find maps among the sea of weapons/gameplay mods.

The one provision I will want to make regarding a Maps subforum: I am not about to start sifting through all the Projects threads to figure out which ones belong in Maps, so I'd like to request that the Report Post button be used to flag threads that need moving. Please don't bump the ones that'd need moving.

Agreed, and all in favor of helping.

Will Projects have two sub-forums, one for maps, TC, etc. and other for gameplay exclusives? Or will maps only have a sub-forum and the main Projects is still for gameplay?

I certainly wouldn't mind spending a good part of the day moving topics. I'm here most of the day anyway, right? :P

Actually, hmm, here's a thought - Projects gets split into a main forum and two subforums (not counting Resources which gets left alone):
  • Just Maps - For projects focused on maps; this'd include things like single levels, megawads, and megawads that have new texture sets.
  • Just Mods - For projects that alter gameplay that don't include their own levels. Weapon mods, monster mods, DeHackEd patches, high-res texture packs, and Jimmy's Jukebox, among others.
Everything that includes both Map and Mod gets left in the main Projects area, accounting for total conversions, megawads that include new monsters or weapons, or full gameplay replacements like Reelism.

Can I quickly toss in a rider to the suggestion, and ask that the subtitle of the projects forum be reworded? It explicitly states it's for "ZDoom projects", but that is clearly not the case. I took a lot of flak and namecalling from people when I calmly tried to ask if EDGE projects were permitted there.

Actually I'm pretty sure Coraline is just the exception.

She was the only one who was actually nice to me and apologized for it later.

It's sort of an unwritten thing that ZDoom Projects can be a place for almost anything from any port, otherwise Zandronum projects, vanilla mega wads, and GLOOME stuff would be basically verboten. I'm okay with anything as long as it's clear what port it needs.

And maybe if we changed it from an unwritten thing to a written thing, we could avoid issues like what I had to face. I haven't been the only one since, either.

Hmm - actually, it IS written, right in Project Posting Guidelines, now that I look:
10) The Projects forum is NOT just for ZDoom-specific projects! We'll accept threads for damn near anything Doom-engine-related, and that includes projects for Zandronum, PRBoom+, vanilla Doom, Heretic, Strife, Doom 64 or even Vavoom if you want to go that route. All we ask is that you make it clear what your project needs to run; people don't tend to guess correctly when faced with a project that "won't start."

I suppose the simplest correction is the removal of just one letter - "Doom projects," not "ZDoom projects." =P
