Does anyone know of a place where I can somehow track down the origins of an image? I'm curious where this stock image came from, and where it was produced from:



A similar picture I've seen in an online version of the OpenGL Red Book seems to be taken from the same place, but from a different angle. There, the image is claimed to be taken from a coffee shop in Palo Alto, but that's about it. I'm not sure where this version came from, but I've seen it in many places, from game creation environments, to commercial environments (I took the particular one from the 3D Text screensaver in Windows XP, and I think I actually saw it used in the Doctor Who episode "Boom Town", when Margaret is in the bathroom taking off the human suit, the eyes have the distinctive four bright highlights as seen in the image), and I am weridly curious as to where it came from, and where it was taken at.

This has fascinated me for days. It's apparently the standard bearer for spheremaps, and it was originally included in early versions of OpenGL as an example of environment mapping. SGI originally developed OpenGL, based in California, so... it's a bar somewhere in California. That's where the trail ends.

After exhausting Google searching, I have finally found the answer, it is Cafe Verona:



What led me to the answer was quite a journey. In a nutshell, I took your sphere map and used image search to find this *.pdf, which had the cubemap (page 99):



With the cube map I image searched that, and found this page, which finally tells you which cafe it's from. It was a very fun experience.
