I'm working on my new Doom heightmap tool again. The initial export of a 256x256 sized map in textmap is 53.8 MB large, and it compresses down to 3 MB.

Is the 53.8 figure remotely normal? I understand why it compresses so well, but this just seems weird even with the huge amount of data I'm exporting.

I already tried that before. It looks really bad from a distance.

Besides, the current decal ("SCORCH" i think) looks MSPaint-ish and I like that. :P

That's normal... textmaps can get super huge uncompressed.

I think there are too many wringles, espectially the hat. Flat surfaces like a which hat, which would be made of a relatively rigid cloth, shouldn't have many (if any) wrinkles on it.

Finally, Terra is producing something remotely usable. Lighting also mostly works, but it looks ugly when there are sharp changes in terrain (as seen in the third screenshot). Not really much I can do about that, though.

Here, play around with an early beta (.net framework 3.5 required)

It mostly works, but there are a few issues at the moment:
  • You can't have a ceiling heightmap alone, you must also have a floor heightmap
  • Terrain lighting is a bit messy with ceilings at the moment. Might add a ZTerrain-like lighting mode. There might also be lighting issues still, but I can't find any.
  • Not all features may work fully or at all. I think I was drunk when I wrote the base code, as it's a messy kludge.
  • The WAD exporter is not present yet, it only exports the TEXTMAP lump.
  • The terrain generator does nothing.

But for general usage it should be fine.
