[Bug?] Zdoom 96 - Railgun creating odd blood results

Post by Caligari87 »

Has anyone noticed that the railgun tends to throw bloodsplats forward, not behind the victim? I've tested this, and I almost never get a splat on the wall behind them, even when they're right next to it.

I can't give much more info besides this, but I hope someone else knows how to proceed.

Ahem...Is this slated to be looked at in the code? Just wondering...

Think about it, a rail driving threw your body and creating impact and the blood spatters backwards because of the impact. :P

Is this going to be fixed (unofficial or official)?

There's nothing to fix. I'm quite sure this is intentional.

It doesn't make sense though! I mean, a slug of depleted uranium traveling a several hundred meters per second should leave a nasty gore splat on the wall behind the victim, shouldn't it?

Whatever... maybe it could be changed so that it splats both ways. It just bugs me!

If you really think about it, no, not really. I can see how blood would come out in front of the person. Theres a law of physics that illustrates this, I just don't remember it. Contrawise if you don't think deeply about it, you realise its just a game, a very old one at that, and realism wasn't the key  .

If a hole is opened up in you and you're thrown back at high speed from the round, the blood inside your body would find that way out and spew out a lot of blood, and the inertia would *sort of* prevent spray from the exit side. But yeah, it's not a very realistic effect.

Possibly, possibly not. You assume that's what the Zdoom (ie Quake2) style rail gun is supposed to be doing. I'm also fairly sure a slug of depleted uranium wouldn't leave a nice blue spiral pattern with a stright white central trace either, but it does in Zdoom. In other words...

For all I know the Zdoom railgun might fire some vacuum charged anti-matter thingy or some such bollocks to explain the blood being flung in that direction.

I like the current effect anyway. :P

It's simple. Just imagine a water drop falling into a basin -- the water will "back up" into the air. Same for a zombie which is lying on the ground and you're dropping a blood drop on his wound. Same for someone standing upright.

Try it: go out into da hood, and shoot someone right in the face. Do you get wet, or the wall behind him? (Answer: both)

Perfectly phyiscally reasonable. However, this turned up a small bug: non-railgun shots don't splat [ a little ] to the front. Or in an example: shooting the doom player in a 64x64 box should mark all four walls with blood splats, the one behind him the most. Crushing a player should mark all four walls equally, and, once we have floor/ceiling splats, these too.

Hmmm... I guess overall concensus is either "I like it," or "It doesn't matter."

*cry* I don't like this effect! Please! Pretty-please-with-a-cherry-on-top! Make them bleed! Make them bleed more! Blood all around, with the bloody backdrop the bloodiest! Blood! Blood! BLOOD!!

*gasping*

Okay, sorry * infinity.

-----------------------

This made me think (OUCH!); for a long time I've wanted better control over the bloodsplats / bleeding stuff. Perhaps blood behavior (spread patterns, distance, direction, amount, different blood for different monsters, etc). Some of it could be bound to weapon code (like my sniper rifle would cause a larger bloodsplat than a pistol).

Anyway....
