Moving sectors (not really)

Post by Risen »

I built this for Twice Risen. TR probably won't be out for a long time, and I thought other people could use this to good effect. It's a working demo of a moving sectors illusion. There is a hitch—you're not allowed to use my car anywhere.

Graf, remember the "coolest skybox effect ever" conversation? Just keep it in mind when you run this.

Oh, and if someone wants to mirror the file somewhere, feel free. I'll keep it on my server as long as I'm able, but I make no guarantees.

This is indeed one of the coolest looking effects ever. Risen let me preview this before posting it here, and my jaw dropped when I saw it. It certainly fooled me into believing I was watching a car driving down the road in the Doom engine. Very very nice.

HOLY SHIT!!!! THAT IS AMAZING!!!!!!! Only the smartest of the smart can think up of an effect like that. I'd love to see a full map that actually uses this. Hopefully TR is released sometime this milennium.

How the fluff did you do that!?

Does this coolest sky box effect wad exist? I liked Goobermans star box example, and what he did in his level, but I think he coud have detailed the ship a lot more to make it look really nice.

Open the level up and look for yourself. It's a precisely aligned set of nested skyboxes and moving cameras. It could be done without ACS if you didn't care much for timing. There are of course limitations to the effect, especially with respect to interaction. However, I think I've just scratched the surface here. I actually came close to being able to drive the car around, but I haven't figured out how to do collision checking yet.

My comment to Graf was because he thought Daedalus had the coolest skybox effect ever, but I was already working on this and thought I could beat it. Daedalus' effect is still definitely cool, but I recognized it as a skybox right away.

I saw this as a skybox first thing, too. It was quite convincing though, as my above post shows. :P

Unless I'm thinking of a different bit, the Daedalus one is essentially a fancy, more involved version of the same principle Gooberman used in his WAD. Very effective, but in essence, not a new idea. This, however, is novel and impressive.

Hm... It is not the first time I see such effect =\ I can clearly remember even I remade it when I saw it in another map.

Can you point to this other WAD? I don't remember seeing anything like this before, and it appears no one else in this thread does, either.
