The most disturbing review of Titan

Post by Ixnatifual »

I was looking at WIP and noticed there was a new comment to my Titan 2 entry. Within the comment was a link to the strangest review I have ever read. It is a review of the original Titan. I've read through it about ten times, and I am still uncertain of whether it is a positive review, a negative review or simply a joke. The only thing I am certain of, is the large amount of drugs present in the reviewer's system when he wrote his review.

He also seems to have run the WAD in an unintended port with some really odd settings, as he has some problems that I can't find evident neither in its intended source port or the port he is using. It also sounds like he played it on Nightmare or something. :S

And what's more, he modified the level set. The modified level has also gained 2MB and has the review as well as some large, unused textures in it. He has also replaced the sky textures used, though only the one he added in map01+02 looks bad.

What's even stranger, he sometimes addresses me as "Kadon", which is a nickname I dropped years before joining the community - which makes me think it must be some old friend of mine from ages ago making a prank on me. However the name "Jive" doesn't ring any bells.

Please help me find out what's going on by reading the review for yourself:

Sounds like a guy who frequents the DRDTeam forums.

Here's a thread he's got a lot of posts in.

It almost seems as though he either has a bad grasp of English, or uses a translator.

I believe he's from France. He used to run the legacy mod website http://www.doomwadstation.com/dlw/
As far as the nickname... Well did you used to use legacy any?

I have used Legacy, but I've never used that web-site.

He says on the page he played it in GZDoom...

...Not all those screenshots look like GZDoom. May just be me, but they don't.

I notice Jive tends to modify other peoples' WADs and then redistribute them a lot. He shouldn't be doing that...

EXACTLY what problem do you have with my website? Is it that it does something you can't? Jealous? What's your issue?

As for Jive. He is french. He lives in Brazil and he doesn't have the best grasp of English but he's a damn fine gentleman, which is more than I can say about alot of people in the Doom community.

Geez, why are you people from doomwadstation calling everyone who don't like it jealous? As a webmaster, I don't like these things:
  • It isn't written in valid HTML
  • It's hard to navigate through the site
  • The design is inconsistent
  • There are too many unnecessary scripts
  • The visit counter provided on some pages doesn't count visits but hits

What is "valid" html? It displays, doesn't it?
Hmmm - hard to navigate? I don't think so.
Inconsistent? At times. I don't care.
Different counters measure different things. Why does anyone care?
What I do care about is people taking cheap shots at the site for no apparent reason. Apparently, 40,000 people a month find reasons to visit the website so I guess it can't be doing too bad.
If I had begun everything on day one with the exact same program and php and all the new stuff that has come along, perhaps it would be more visually stunning or some crap but who cares? It's been online for over 8 years, offers 30 gigs of downloads and reviews of maps so that people have an idea of what is worth downloading and what isn't. So why do people attack it? What harm is it doing them? Or anyone? It is a very helpful site that offers something that no other site does - a complete and growing archival website for the id mapping community.
So what's the beef?

Valid HTML conforms to standards and you should follow them if you want to be treated like a serious webmaster, not a kid who uses IE to "debug" his site.

That's the problem, it's 40000 hits, not people. E.g. last month there were 460062 hits at drdteam.org, but that's only 15587 visits, and you can't still count that as "people", because one person can visit the site more than once a month.

The one who should care is you, if you want people to stop attacking your site.

I'm with Sematary here.
I mean come one, nobody forces you to visit the site and he's just trying to contribute something to the community!
If you don't like the website, just don't visit it... it's simple as that.
Why do some people feel the need to constantly bash someone others work?
Is it this hard to just shut up?
