Randy, please release the next official version of ZDoom. :(

Discuss anything ZDoom-related that doesn't fall into one of the other categories.

Randy, please release the next official version of ZDoom. :(

Post by Nash »

We understand that you are obsessed with The Burning Crusade, and I really don't expect the craze to die soon. I'm estimating that it'll take you a year or more before you finally say "I've had enough". Even if you aren't playing WoW, you probably... well you probably have other things to do that's not related to Doom and that's cool.

I really hope you would just release 2.1.8 or 2.2.0 or whatever it's going to be, because a lot of people are waiting on ZDoom - projects that use unofficial features, undocumented features waiting to be added into the wiki, ports that are waiting on yours (like GZDoom), etc. Just release it, and you can be done with it. You can play WoW all you want without worrying about people complaining about why isn't the next version out yet. :D

Are you waiting to implement some super duper big feature in the short term or something? Some mega bug unknown to any of us? Any information for us will be fine. Otherwise, the most recent build is pretty stable to me and pretty much ready to be an official release.

(Except for those two new ACS functions which still hasn't been tested because ACC hasn't been updated)

Or you can just wrap it all up and call it the next new version. :)

In time, I'm sure.

I have a hard time believing lack of a release comes from some form of negligence (WoW or otherwise), considering the changelog shows work is being done with a high frequency. He'll get around to it.

I know Randy is a person with a life (I hope :P), but I'd like at least some sort of explanation for the delay. I've been waiting for the next version for quite some time.

What's wrong with the latest SVN build?

Basically, you shouldn't be releasing projects for an unofficial build. While it is somewhat unlikely to happen in this scenario, in theory there is no guarentee that anything which is made on an unofficial build which uses new features will work correctly with a newer, later official build, as these features are considered in development and open for change. Once they are in an official build, there is more of an effort to maintain backwards compatibility. The short of it is, SVN builds are like betas to try out, but are not for general player base consumption.

There is a new version of ZDoom, he just hasn't bothered to "officially" release it

every know-better person would not release a long awaited project without a feature fully implemented or some nasty bugs fixed

patience dammit. If you can't have any, then gtfo and stop demanding versions. People have lives.

See the whole custominventory issue: It was told WELL before 2.1.0 it was going to be the way it was yet too many stupid people carried on the 2.0.96x convention regardless.

If you must know, I want to get state sets in, since they will change the syntax for accessing labels in other state blocks.

So? I should probably bump the version as the first commit after a release, since it's not the released version anymore.

patience dammit. If you can't have any, then download the SVN binary from the wiki front page and play around with that until the stable release. People have lives.
Fixed for politeness and truth.

Cheap, you tried hard to sound all hostile and crap but it just didn't work. You see, as far as I'm concerned, I will always be able to play the latest version because I'm compiling it myself.

What I am really concerned about though is OTHER people who are waiting on the next official version. These people include people who do not have access to the source code, people who simply refuse to use unofficial EXEs, and then there are people with WADs who use unofficial features. And there's also Graf Zahl, who refuses to release the next version of GZDoom until the next official version of ZDoom is out.

It concerned me because Randy was being quiet about it before this thread. Not a single word, until he said the following:
If you must know, I want to get state sets in
... which explains that he is indeed trying to implement a big change into the program, and not delay it for no reason (which isn't really wrong technically because it's his project and he can do whatever he likes, yes, but it just wouldn't be very corteous of him if he did that)

So, as you can see, my post wasn't really selfish and I was just expressing my concern that other people might have already been waiting for a very long time for the next version.

Anyway, thanks for the explanation Randy.

CUriousity here, but is there a way to compile a VS project from command like, much like using a makefile without invoking the IDE? If so.. I have an idea..

And afterward the same stupid people called ZDoom names because they refused to see their own error...
