Should I release my weapons mod, even though it uses a lot of ripped sprites and sounds?

A new weapons wad release?

Post by Theshooter7 »

Okay, I have been working on a Decorate weapons mod for a while now. I have been periodically releasing it to the ST Community. Then I was thinking of releasing it to the ZDoom Community (I mean after all, it is made for ZDoom ;) ) Problem is, it uses ALL kinds of ripped sprites. I was curious if I would be allowed to release it. Here is a small list of wads I have ripped from:

Hexen
WRW
1337guns
Doom3_weapons_zdoom
icd-se
icd-deh
ww-stranger
cw-sin1
pyro_x
grenade_x
bf-cdoom

There are more, but I can't remeber all of them. The wad has about 40 weapons right now. So I want you guys to decide if I can/should release it.

If you feel like it, for small giggles or amusement for others, then sure.

You can release it, just credit the places where you got the sprites from.

I'd only put the guns in the wad that you did stuff to, regardless of who's it was.

What I'm saying is if you converted these people's weapons into decorate format, changed their palette to work in doom, or other such modifications, then it's okay to release it, provided you give them credit. If you just took all the weapons mods you could find and put them into one big one, I think the origional authors would rather you just release a list of links.

No. All (or at least 98% of) the weapons are all my own Decorate work. The sprites and sounds were the only concern.

I think it's fine to release it so long as you credit the authors of the weapons first. I'd say add some commented lines above the DECORATE entries for your weapons say:
DECORATE wrote:// Props to SomeGuy for doing this weapon!

actor SomeGuysWeapon : Weapon 1337
{
stuffage
}

I would've done crediting by putting a CREDITS lump, since that's what I did for my current mod, heheh. :)

Good idea Jimmy. Now why couldn't you say that at the ST Forums? lol. Anyways, I already posted the topic for it. If it does not go well, I'll have a mod/admin trash it.

Well, as long as credit is given, it shoudn't be so bad. Now post that mod and lets see what you've created!

I didn't see any credits in the one that was released earlier... As it used some of my DECORATE and sprite work...

I did not put in anything for the credits...But in the one (and final version) release I am working on has a CREDITS Lump in it. Like I had said, I am killing this project. There is probably going to be 1 more release and that will be all. I'll make my own stuff from now on.

If there will be, make 200 decorate weapons! I will commend you and bow to your feet.

Make a couple deathly overpowered weapons too plx :):)

....200 weapons would be possible, but why on earth would you want a bunch of overpowered weapons? I'd like some nicely balanced weapons.

Logically, you can only have 80 weapons (10 slots with a limit of 8 weapons per slot) before you have to resort to binding other keys to select weapons.

Indeed...

However, overpowered weapons do serve a purpose, as shown in NeoDoom. If you are faced with an overpowered monster (like those Vixens) or a massive crowd of monsters, using the overpowered weapon may well be the best way out, and that BFG 30000... fits the bill very nicely :)
