I'm not sure I can come up with a top 3, so I'm not really going to try, but I am really surprised that Eternal Doom IV has been mentioned but one time from what I've seen.

Aside from the hub (slow gameplay), it probably would really be in my top 3, as the non-hub levels are monstrously huge and enjoyable. So huge, I mean, that most of them feel like an entire episode. If this project is ever finished, I'm in trouble - it would sure to take me a WHILE to play 30+ maps like that, maybe almost a month. But I really do hope it is finished! :)

I honestly think you should. It's a really solid project, very fun, too.

Narrowing it down to three is tough, but if I was pushed I'd have to say:

1. Titan 2. The finest example of the kind of wad I long for in an advanced port - maintaning the traditional and instantly recognizable visual theme from the original Doom and garnishing it with more eye candy, new monsters and weaponry. Yes, it does use scripting, but its key is in its subtlety. And there's loads of huge fights with hordes of demons, just like the first one. Class.

2. The Community Is Falling 3. A masterclass in ACS, and absolutely bloody hilarious to boot. CIF3 has more memorable moments than any other wad I've played. The boss fights were some of the best I have ever seen in any game, let alone a mod for a 16 year old game. It could have been number one in my list, but there were just too many moments which were just plain unfair (cough*jetpack*cough) so it gets relegated for that. Most of the time I was playing it I forgot I was playing a jokewad, simply because of the sheer quality of it all. IMHO CIF3 is the closest thing Doom has ever come to the likes of Gunstar Heroes, and that includes Action Doom. All together now: WWWWRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

3. The Ultimate Torment & Torture. The second most ambitious mod I have ever come across which actually got finished. This mod is huge in scope, it has EVERYTHING. Voice acting, PSX Doom-style cutscene narration, weather effects, Quake textures, custom monsters, custom weapons, ambient SFX, a proper ending sequence and Matrix music. What more could you want? Decent gameplay? Well, yeah, it has that too. The more you play this wad, the better it gets, and the final boss is just skill. This mod dumps on KDiZD from such a height it needs its own oxygen supply.

And the best of the rest:

Aliens TC. One of the very few 1994 wads that still holds up to scrutiny. Justin Fisher managed to recreate the suspense that made the film so great and made Doom into something very different, more of a survival horror than a frantic arcade shooter.

Decade. The way many of the most recognizable areas from D1 & 2 have been recreated and made into a coherent map is very cool. I didn't want it to end.

Titan 1. Had to give the original an honorary mention.

PSX Doom TC. I'm a nostalgia freak like that.

Doom 64 EX. See?

@Eriance: Look on this page, it won the equivalent of a Cacoward in 2003. It is also by Mike "Cyb" Watson, creator of Void, among other things.

Massmouth 2 is now on my next Doom playing list.

Schwing!

It's an epic tongue-in-cheek completely-not-Doom adventure, and also one of the few wads that does cutscenes and scripted sequences just right. Play it now if you haven't.

And don't worry about Massmouth 1 for now. It's not a bad set either, but it doesn't stack up to 2's greatness and there's not really any story stuff you need to know beforehand. It's worth a check out as well, but try 2 first. OBEY

I can't enjoy PSX Doom, for the same reason I don't like Doom 64 EX. I have the originals readily available and I'm anal like that.
