Eh?
There is no official legal status, so "abandonware" indeed means nothing. Technically, true abandonware would be stuff that has fallen into public domain after expiration of its copyright. In the USA, since the Mickey Mouse Protection Act, this means 70 years after author's death for personal authorship; or for 120 years after creation/95 years after publication for corporate authorship.
This means that
Strife will be effectively abandonware in 2091. You can wait that long, can't you? Of course, by that time, there will be no remaining computer able to make it work (because the computers of that time will be even less compatible with DOS than Windows Vista is with ZX81 software) and no remaining copy of it anywhere anyway.
